Fall of the Republic: IVIaceWindu VS Grand Admiral Shaun
Battle Report By: Trent McCrow

After the success of the IDC's first Battle Report it was hard to stay away from these exciting articles. After reading a few of your thoughts about the Rebel/Imperial showdown, it was very evident that a match involving FOTR cards was definitely what the public wanted to see. Well I think we have done one better then that; FOTR ONLY!

On the 30th July 2006, two players pitted their decks against one another. The theme: FOTR only. Now that the stage is set let's meet the participants and their decks:

'Grand Admiral' Shaun Valjin

I have never had the opportunity to play with an entire set. I have always read about decks with a single purpose but I never thought I would be able to create one, let alone play one! Exciting! This is Exciting! I can't wait to see how this battle turns out! My strategy revolves loosely around Separatist Headquarters. Space and Character are my strong arenas. In Character I have all the Dark Jedi available in the FOTR IDC set, with DD-13 Medical Droid and Magnaguards for assistance. Tion Medon (A) will help to keep IVIaceWindu in check. In Space, Lucrehulk-Class Battleships reign fire down on the Ground arena, with a possible upgrade from Vehicle Armor Plating. Sep Buzz Droids and Buzz Swarms will clear the skies of the infamous Starfighters the Light Side employs. My ground is a fast swarm of Separatist Droids with Grievous' Wheelbike (A) and Lava Flea for an all out assault. I also have Utapau Landing Platform for possible healing, Galaxies Opera House for additional draw power and The Chosen One to get my Vader's and Anakin out. 2 Paplpatine's Teachings should help me gain that extra Force. I have Trained in the Arts for reserve and Force Grip's to choke the life out of IVIace's Light Side! I'm fairly confident that this battle strategy will work, despite my urges to have one of each card in my deck. I am looking forward to the FALL OF THE REPUBLIC!

Trent 'IVIaceWindu' McCrow

I am very excited about this coming match. In our last meeting Shaun and I pitted Rebels against Imperials with myself emerging victorious. Being limited to one set of cards takes me back to the good old Days of AOTC only but today it is FOTR only! I've gone for a clone deck with limited Jedi support in Space. This is the first time Shaun and I have physically played with the FOTR cards (he just printed 4 copies of each) and I'm looking forward to how they work in a real game environment. There are some great anti-Clone cards for the DS and I'm hoping the Grand Admiral won't exploit them against me.

Trent's Commentary
I'll be able to take Space and this turn I'm hoping to rid Lucrehulk-Class from the Space arena. With Grievous in Character there isn't much hope for Cody so I'll have to get Gree in there and beef him up with Equipment. Ground looks like I'm going to lose there as well. If the Wheelbike attacks the AT-OT at least my Swamp Speeder will be able to attack this turn and do some damage. I'm keeping Clone Grenade as a surprise for when Gree jumps into the fray.

Shaun's Commentary
Character is mine! Grievous (A) can hold his own quite well, Ground seems a tie slightly in my favour, but Trent will soon control Space. I hope to combat Trent in Space with Buzz Droid Swarm for reinforcements.

Shaun's Commentary
Space is lost, but Character is mine! I can still stack Grievous next turn and Ground is looking in my favour. The next turn I plan to make it mine by deploying the Tri-Droid. I think the game is MINE!

Trent's Commentary
As I predicted, Space will be mine, but it will be at the cost of the game I fear… I came out of the Ground battle with more units then I expected with both my unit's surviving, not that they helped me out.

Turn Two

Ready Phase
Un-tap all units.
Dark Side gains 4 Force (6 total)
Light Side gains 4 Force (8 total)
Build Roll: 5

Command Phase
Dark Build: 6 build

Dark Side player places 5 build counters on Separatist Headquarters and deploys it into the Character arena.
The Dark Side player places 3 build counters on Octuptarra Tri-Droid and deploys it into the Ground arena (due to Separatist Headquarters).
Dark Side player places 1 build counter on Galaxies Opera House and deploys it into the Ground arena.

Light Build: 6 build

The Light Side player places 3 build counters on Swamp Speeder and deploys it into the Ground arena.
The Light Side player places 3 build counters on Commander Gree (A).

Dark Side player doesn't retreat.
Light Side player retreats 41st Elite Corps Scout.

Shaun's Commentary
Character is MINE!!! This game might stretch to a third turn, I'm hoping not as now I have a clear advantage over Trent. Unless he has some tricks up his sleeve; "You must realize Trent… you… are… DOOMED!!!"

Trent's Commentary
Well, Grievous' quote seems to be coming true. Shaun has Character all but locked down and I'll get Space this turn. Ground will be tricky but I'm hoping my Swamp Speeders can take down the Tri-Droid. I will not let this Republic that has been around for 2000 years fall on my watch!

Battle Phase

  • Tap Separatist Buzz Droid and do 1 damage to Guarla (A).
  • Clone Starfighter Squadron attacks Separatist Buzz Droid with 4 power ' 4 Hits' - Separatist Buzz Droid discarded.

Shaun's Commentary
Victory will be mine! Grievous holds Character and there is 1 damage counter on the remaining Swamp Speeder, the only thing in my path to glorious victory!

Trent's Commentary
The shroud of the Dark Side has fallen. It looks almost certain Shaun will win this one. If I can use the Force and roll a six for the build roll next turn I can deploy Gree and attach 3 pieces of Clone Equipment to him…. Fingers crossed.

Light Side gains 4 Force (12 total)
Build Roll: 6 (Trent: "YES!")

The Dark Side player places 2 build counters on Shock Trooper.
The Dark Side player places 3 build counters on Buzz Droid Swarm.

Light Build: 6 build
Draw: So Uncivilized

Trent's Commentary
YES!!! WOOT!!! Victory is mine! With ultimate Gree in Character and So Uncivilized up my sleeve I will be able to take down Grievous with a Critical Hit! As I always say I might always be outnumbered but I'm never outgunned!

Shaun's Commentary
Surprised me, he did with his SUPER Gree combo. It makes little difference with my Hidden Cost Shock Trooper! Ground is mine! And next turn I should win!

Post Battle Thoughts

'Grand Admiral' Shaun Valjin
Trent, you must realise, you have been DOOMED!!! Mwah huh huh huh. I WON! I must admit that having multiple copies of various cards was favourable to my sufficient drawing. I think my victory is due to my great units drawn, your bad die rolls in the Ground arena on the 1st turn and having Grievous (A). I am thankful that I put Grievous (B) on the bottom of my deck to draw Shock Trooper, as drawing Shock trooper is what won the game for me! I was very lucky that Shock Trooper did 3 damage to Gree letting Grievous deflect to discard Gree. I must admit Trent surprised me with his 'super Gree' the walking arsenal I thoroughly enjoyed having the upper hand, which I don't usually have. I have decided that I like FOTR and this deck. Until next time. Mwuh huh huh. Grand Admiral Shaun.

Trent 'IVIaceWindu' McCrow
My spirits have been crushed. I was elated top have the opportunity to steal an 11th hour victory for myself and I was telling myself it was possible. And then the first blow to my game winning plan came, Hidden Cost Shock Trooper. He was able to mortally wound Gree and Stun him. With only 3 power Gree needed to roll 2 Hits with one of them being Critical, unfortunately for me that didn't happen and I lost the game. The tension during the match was through the roof as I'm not used to being on the back foot. Congratulations mate for your successful assault! Today I truly did witness the FALL OF THE REPUBLIC!
