RULING
7/5/2006

Wizard's Official CFER ruling on Lando Calrissian (D) states that no matter which version of Lando is on top of the stack (say, the Dark Side player lost him and the Light Side player used Hidden Cost on Lando Calrissian (H) to put him on top of the stack), when the Character battle step ends, the Lando unit will return to the player who controlled him prior to the start of the Character battle step.

From the above Lando Calrissian (D) ruling, and the rule on page 5 of the RotS Rulebook (Text that includes the name of the card it’s on refers only to that card, not to any other cards with the same name.), when a unique unit refers to itself, it's referring to "this unit". The use of the word "the card" is a generality for any card. The page 5 entry is stating that any cards "external" to itself aren't affected by the use of a "self-referential" name.

For instance, if a Neutral unique unit, say George Lucas (A), was in play by both players and one had an ability that said, "Pay 2 Force ® George gets +20 self-importance until end of turn. Play only during your build step." For the person who played this ability, only their George gets the effect.

Another consideration is the reminder text on some cards' abilities. The standard reminder text for Evade states "Prevent 2 damage to this unit," but the unique unit's reminder text for the same ability states "Prevent 2 damage to Anakin." The self-reference is merely a replacement for "this unit."

What about Sith Infiltrator (A) and Yoda (K) stacks on discard? It's not until the unit stack is actually in the discard pile before any of these cards on top of the stack trigger on discard. That's why any cards stacked beneath them will not return to a player's hand along with the card with the effect.

The Lando Calrissian (D) effect is "set and held" and will resolve at the end of turn. Anakin Skywalker (P)'s is worded similarly, so this also applies. There is no "trigger point" at the end of turn for this ability. The effect was already in play once control of the unit is assumed. The return-of-control part of the effect is waiting to resolve at end of turn, not waiting to be triggered at end of turn.

So, what does this mean? When Anakin Skywalker (P) refers to himself in his ability, it means "this unit". It doesn't mean "this Anakin unit" or "this Anakin Skywalker unit". If his name or version changes, it won't matter. "The unit" will return to the player who controlled it prior to the start of the battle step.

The Executor can have up to three Pilots.

Each of your Imperial units' activated abilities costs 1 less Force to play.

Executor (C) - BOE -

The chosen unit can be the same as the original defending unit for the attack.

The attacking unit is making one attack with two separate sets of attack dice. Each defending unit is considered to be attacked, and any abilities they have that trigger from being attacked will trigger.

There is one damage prevention PoP chance for the two defending units, not two separate damage prevention PoP chances. Also, damage counters from multiple instances of damage from one source are considered to be placed all at once. One damage prevention PoP chance. One placement of all damage counters following that damage prevention PoP chance.

Captain Lorth Needa (A) piloting Executor (C) Applying the IDC Rulebook rules for Intercept, Needa's "discard himself" ability will apply to both the first and second defending unit chosen. If one or both of the defending units are not discarded, Needa will be discarded. If only one unit is chosen as the first and second defending unit, from my ruling above, all damage counters from the damage done by the two sets of attack dice will be applied all at once. There will be only one opportunity (or check) instead of two to see if Needa will be discarded.
