IDC Trickery
By Len Fowler and Trent McCrow

After the success of the second expansion set for the Star Wars Trading Card Game (SWTCG), produced by the Independent Development Committee (IDC), the focus of the IDC shifted to the future. For the Public Affairs Sub-Committee this meant a change in focus from self-promotion to the promotion of a good relationship with the SWTCG community. The end of 2006 saw the first steps towards a better community focus, one that would build the SWTCG community and provide a sense of ownership by the players for the SWTCG. It was on the 29th of December 2006 that the IDC first reached out to the community by celebrating the holiday season with an early preview of the Battle of Endor expansion in the article, A Gift for the Holidays! The IDC continued working towards their goal of a greater community focus by celebrating April Fools day in a unique way.

On the 30th of March 2007, the IDC displayed some of its trickery in the form of two articles; Battle of Endor - Preview Poster and Battle of Endor Preview Cards. These two articles caused much speculation and discussion over at rebelbasers.com as to their validity and it wasn't until the 1st of April that the truth was revealed and the real Poster and Preview Cards were revealed.

In my recent interview with C. J. Williams (aka Corjay) I asked him what he really thought about our April Fool's joke, he replied, "I cracked up as soon as I saw it. I thought it was great. I understood, too, why they did it early. Not everyone would have gotten the chance to see it on April 1st. I think it was in very good taste and an amazing effort on everyone's part. The outlandish power of the cards was also very amusing." It was this feedback that inspired me to write this article and I'm glad that our attempts to reach out to the SWTCG community are getting somewhere and building a stronger relationship between all parties involved.

What you don't know is how much work actually went into the IDC's trickery. The four "BOE Preview Cards" that were "spoiled" were in fact a small portion of those created for the April Fools shenanigans. Len Fowler (RedneckJedi) worked quite extensively on making this a reality and produced a whopping 51 "BOE Cards"!!!!

As my family was convalescing from various illnesses in February, I started thinking about the IDC Panel's desire to do something for April Fool's Day. I thought, "What can we do for Battle of Endor that would be funny, but within the realm of believability?" I kept my focus on Endor, and could really only think about the obviously funny "Tag & Bink" comic books. Later, I browsed my DVD collection, and saw the two made-for-TV Star Wars movies Lucas released.

The title of the second movie, Battle for Endor, immediately clicked with me, and I [shudder] watched the movie again and started taking notes on potential card themes. By the end of the weekend, I had 51 (I know... not an even number) card images ready and pitched them to the IDC Panel. They thought they were a hoot, and since the work was already done, it left the rest of the IDC free to work on the real set. A little tweaking in the following weeks made them ready to go and a big thanks go to Brian (Skywlkr) for coming up with the teaser poster.

While our little prank was cheered and jeered, I do (and did) apologize to our IDC members who were left out of the loop. Our intent was to spread the "fun" around to more players, and include some "plausible deniability" to those individuals. Most obvious pranks are done on April Fool's Day, but with it falling on a Sunday, we doubted many people would read it. With our weekly article releases on Friday and a true spoiler article prepped, we felt it best to merely announce the April Fool's on that day and release the true article.

The unit choices were pretty scarce. There weren't a lot of good guys, but there were plenty of bad guys. I had the most fun with the non-unit cards (check out the pit cage from Temple of Doom in the Terak's Dungeon card). But on the unit side, I particularly liked the Charal-based and Teek cards and the synergy I attempted to infuse in the Marauder units. And as for the Marauder Mobile Cannon, I don't remember the history of that card... I may have tried to make it "playable" or could have just left a build cost of 2 in there from a previous card. But enough talk! I hope you enjoy what was, but shall never be.
