Luke’s X-Wing Pilot
by Marc McNeill

In my opinion, the best card ever created by the IDC was Luke’s X-Wing (E). The card gives the player the ability to win the space arena at a cheap cost and consequently allows the player to spend more resources in another arena. I have played with many different version of this deck and all have played with great success. Here is my most current version:

Luke’s X-Wing Pilot

      Totals:
15 Character
12 Ground
12 Space
17 Battle
4 Mission
0Location
0 Equipment
60 Total Cards

Character: (15)
2x Boba Fett (H)
3x Luke Skywalker (S)
4x R2-D2 (J)
2x Wedge Antilles (C)
4x Yoda (J)

By far and away, R2-D2 (J) is the most important. When we get the space arena, I will go into more depth on his power. Wedge Antilles (C) is the backup pilot and can win space by himself as well.

However, this deck intends to win Character, at least win when the draw allows it to. The goal is to get out Yoda (J) in setup and have either Luke Skywalker (S) or Boba Fett (H) ready to Hidden Cost into the arena as soon as Yoda dies. Yoda allows the player to grab Luke's X-wing (E) or R2D2 (J) to insure a space victory or to grab units/Battle cards to win in either the Ground or Character arena. Luke (S) and Boba Fett (H) finish off the units that Yoda leaves behind. I generally have one unit out at a time. These three units are close to the best the LS player has and together they can defeat ‘tanks’ like Darth Vader (S) and swarms like those found in a Trade Federation themed deck.

Ground: (12)
2x Anakin's Podracer (A)
4x Rebel Armored Freerunner
2x Sebulba's Podracer (A)
4x Unmodified Snowspeeder

In my opinion, losing Ground is rarely devastating and by running high-speed units, I can usually kill off any synergy cards like Endor Bunker (A). However, this deck can win ground by itself especially in conjunction with Discuss It in Committee and Power Dive. It’s efficient and in conjunction with Yoda’s drawing ability, can win Ground with very little build points devoted to it.

In Play Testing, I often find that I try to avoid fighting in ground until I have Battle cards, which enable me to win Ground without any losses. That way, it’s a done deal; DS can’t come back into the arena at a later stage. Combined with Luke's X-wing (E) in Space, this forces my opponent to launch attacks at Yoda (J), just further increasing my position.

Space: (12)
2x Luke's X-Wing (B)
1x Luke's X-Wing (C)
1x Luke's X-Wing (D)
4x Luke's X-wing (E)
4x Republic Hyperdrive Ring

When a deck is named after a Space unit, that can’t attack other arenas, then the combo has to be pretty good right? Well, this combo is better than pretty good. It’s downright abusive.

Now, when I see other pilot decks, they usually seem to have multiple ships in space. They have the Millennium Falcon, Luke’s X-Wing, Obi-Wan’s Starfighter, etc and the goal is to simply throw out good space ships and good pilots to win space. Not a bad strategy. But one this deck does not employ.

This deck plans to build one starfighter and one pilot. With those, it plans to beat everything the DS can throw out at it.

The main combo is Luke’s X-wing (E) with R2-D2 (J) piloting.

If you really want to see how good the combo is try this setup for fun:

For the LS put Luke’s X-Wing (E) stacked once with R2-D2 (J) piloting it in the Space arena. For the DS, place 4x Endor Imperial Fleets, 4 TIE Interceptors, 4 TIE Pursuit Wings, 1x Vader’s TIE Fighter (C), 4x Indictor Class Destroyers, 4x TIE Defender, 4x TIE Hunter and 1x Death Star II (D) in the Space arena. Now play normally. The majority of the time, the LS player should win space. Now, when you had more Luke’s X-Wings’, Wedge, the Republic Hyperdrive Rings and all the Battle cards, you see why this deck is so good. Space is near impossible for the DS player to win unless you get a horrible draw. And most of the time, you will only place around 11-12 build into space.

With Yoda’s stall and draw ability, you can now draw the cards for the 2nd arena you wish to win.

Battle: (17)
4x Discuss It in Committee
2x Dismiss
4x High-Speed Dodge
3x Hotwire
4x Power Dive

Battle cards in this deck are crucial. There might be room to remove the 'disrupts' but the rest are crucial. Discuss it in Committee helps in ground and against Death Star II (A). Power Dive helps in Space against Droid Missiles. High Speed Dodge helps in all arenas and works especially well against Death Star II (A). All I can say is this; the Battle cards in this deck make the deck amazing. You might just have two units in the Ground arena, but with these Battle cards you can win Ground without even being attacked.

Mission: (4)
4x Homing Missile

Homing Missile is there to (1) help win in the ground or character arena and (2) to help get rid of Droid Missiles.

Conclusion:
This deck is one of the best decks available to the LS player. When you can spend less than 12 build in one arena and virtually assure victory, then you can focus all the other build, force, Battle cards, and Mission cards into one other arena. Luke's X-Wing (E) and R2-D2 (J) do not just win you space. They win another arena too.

Other Possibilities:
By far, Podracing Course and Explore the Swamps are very tempting in a pilot deck. However, in my opinon, such a deck is completely different. So, instead of giving a cursory view on the deck, I will save it for another article.

If you hate running multiples, then this deck will be hard for you. One option is dropping one Luke Skywalker (S) for Obi-Wan Kenobi (Q). Also, you could drop Sebulba’s Podracer (A) and Anakin’s Podracer (A) to one and add two Rebel Commando Units. Other than that, I think you need to run the multiples.

CHECK BACK NEXT WEEK FOR A BATTLE REPORT FEATURING THIS DECK.
