Mistress of the Dark Side
By Cody Barnett

The power of the dark side is on the rise, and the influence of the guardians of peace and justice ebbs as the fires of the Clone Wars consume the galaxy. The masterminds behind the plot control both warring factions and are using the conflict to slowly extinguish the flame of the Jedi. Cogs of war churn out machinations to collapse the opposing side.

"She is merely an instrument to bring forth the eradication of the Jedi."—Darth Sidious

Asajj Ventress epitomizes the objective of the Clone Wars. As Count Dooku's trusted lieutenant, the Rattataki slays Jedi across the galaxy as the battle theater moves closer to Coruscant, home of the Jedi Temple. This deck will focus on the Dark Jedi used by the Sith puppeteers and particularly on Asajj Ventress.

Character: (15)
3x Asajj Ventress (A)
3x Asajj Ventress (B)
1x Asajj Ventress (C)
4x Corrupt Senator
2x Darth Sidious (J)
2x Flalios (A)

The Dark Side is renowned for the colossal Character cards that it proudly boasts. The range of these dominating titans includes all of the Sith Lords - Darth Maul, Darth Sidious, Darth Tyranus, and Darth Vader - as well as the domineering General Grievous. One card that has eluded the public's notice, however, is the powerful disciple of Count Dooku introduced in Clone Wars: Republic at War: Asajj Ventress. This dark lady has the potential to thwart the Jedi via the use of astronomical power that erodes the defenses of the Light Side. These traits make Asajj Ventress the perfect centerpiece for a Dark Jedi deck. The deck will primarily use Asajj Ventress (A) and Asajj Ventress (B) to weather away the Light Side's Character arena; Asajj Ventress (C) can be used if the arena is secure and the Space arena is in need of assistance.

Corrupt Senator, a card from Invasion of Naboo, helps supply this deck with the necessary resources to fuel the evil horde of Dark Jedi. This shady politician has the potential of granting you an extra two build points and an extra card during your build step; true to his name, however, Corrupt Senator can also be rendered useless by an unlucky roll of a one or two.

Darth Sidious (J) and Flalios (A) serve to buttress the deck in several ways. Darth Sidious (J) is the cornerstone of all Dark Jedi decks, with the potential to raise or lower the power of any attacking unit. Additionally, he can heal your wounded if they are Dark Jedi. This makes a fearsome combination that the Light Side player will dread to see in action. Likewise, Flalios (A) can also serve as a heavy-hitting gladiator in the Character arena with the gruesome Double Strike ability that paralyzes swarm decks and brings behemoth decks to their knees. His additional bonus of +2 power to all other Dark Jedi and Gladiator units makes Flalios (A) an effective choice for this deck as it applies to all three arenas.

Ground: (12)
x4 Gladiatorial Wampa
x3 Sith Master and Apprentice (A)
x3 Sith Master and Apprentice (B)
x4 Squabbling Delegates

The Gladiator subtype was designed to fortify Dark Jedi decks by harmonizing smoothly with the Dark Jedi and assisting in areas where these sinister agents were weak, specifically in the Ground arena. One card that demonstrates this point effectively yet simply is Gladiatorial Wampa. While slow, this leviathan has a potential to smash the Ground forces with a hefty six power and Critical Hit 2. Support from Flalios (A) or Darth Sidious (J) reinforces the beast of burden and ensures that the Light Side will be left in shambles. With Invasion of Naboo, however, the Dark Jedi benefit primarily from new cards that allow expansion into the Ground arena: Sith Master and Apprentice (A) and Sith Master and Apprentice (B). This stackable unit provides a solid unit the Dark Jedi and Sith can rely upon in the Ground arena. Sith Master and Apprentice (A) benefit off of continual use of Mission and Battle cards, while Sith Master and Apprentice (B) serves to boost your units with Equipment attached.

Another crooked Diplomat from Invasion of Naboo provides the deck with bountiful resources. This time, however, the Diplomat is in the Ground arena. Squabbling Delegates is a card that blends the elements of Pirate Swoop and Jawa Sandcrawler together without cycling the two out of play. This versatile card can help pay off debts or reinforce your hand. Additionally, should you have a Sith in any arena, Squabbling Delegates forces your opponent to discard a card from his or her hand. These characteristics make Squabbling Delegates a perfect option for the Dark Jedi deck.

Space: (13)
2x Asajj's Starfighter (A)
2x Asajj's Starfighter (B)
4x Death Star II (D)
1x Tyranus's Solar Sailer (A)
1x Tyranus's Solar Sailer (B)
3x Tyranus's Solar Sailer (C)

Space has always been a tough arena for Dark Side to conquer. The Light Side has had strong defenses in this arena since the games origins with Attack of the Clones. This stronghold was epitomized in the recent banning of Luke's X-wing (E), the impregnable Starfighter card that proved to be one of the most unhealthiest cards in the game. This deck looks to break this Light Side bastion.

Tyranus's Solar Sailer (C) is the focal point of the Space arena. A solid unit of its own right, Tyranus's Solar Sailer (C) also grants bonuses to your other Dark Jedi essential for survival. You can also use Asajj Ventress (C) to pilot Tyranus's Solar Sailer (C) for additional defenses. The main offensive unit in the Space arena is Asajj's Starfighter (A), which, with the potential for Double Strike, can turn the typical Starfighter swarm into ashes.

The Death Star II (D) serves as the Dark Side's greatest resource unit, gaining three build points per turn. his allows you to invest more in non-unit cards such as Equipment. The downturn, however, is that you cannot Intercept attacks; the Death Star II (D) is an easy target with fragile defenses. However, for this deck, a good offense is a good defense - Asajj's Starfighter (A) and Tyranus's Solar Sailer (C) should take care of any units before they can strike the Death Star II (D).

Battle: (8)
2x Dark Rage
2x Enraged Charge
4x Force Punch

Dark Rage and Enraged Charge serve as the offensive Battle cards for the deck. Each offer extensive power to crush the opponent's facade of defenses. Asajj Ventress has the privilege of benefiting from both; each Yoda (J) shudders at the prospect!

Force Punch is the key Battle card of the deck. This card can be used in all three arenas and are an easy way to whittle away the Light Side units. The best card that Force Punch works with is Sith Master and Apprentice (A). After using Force Punch to do two damage to the defending unit, Sith Master and Apprentice (A) will gain two power to help finish off the unit.

Mission: (6)
4x Capture Obi-Wan
2x Unexpected Attack

Mission cards are important to the Dark Jedi deck. Sith Master and Apprentice (A) uses Mission cards to shed damage counters; this is a fundamental part of the card's defense. Capture Obi-Wan is one of the Dark Side's greatest Mission cards; it grants you an extra two Force and saps two Force from your opponent. Now the Mission card has an added benefit of removing two damage counters from Sith Master and Apprentice (A).

Unexpected Attack is an unexpected choice for the Dark Jedi deck. The card works well with Sith Master and Apprentice (A), however; not only will it remove two damage counters from the Ground card for free, but it will also allow you to fight in the Character arena before you fight in the Ground arena. This provides for the use of any of your Battle cards before the fight in the Ground arena. As a result, Sith Master and Apprentice (A) will gain two power for each Battle card you opt to use.

Location: (3)
3x Cloud City Battleground

Cloud City Battleground benefits the Dark Jedi deck by reducing the cost of Battle cards and preserving more Force for activated abilities and Equipment. The Location is also cheap and easy to deploy.

Equipment: (4)
1x Asajj Ventress' Lightsabers (A)
3x Stolen Lightsaber

Equipment was an interesting choice for the Dark Jedi deck. Sith Master and Apprentice (B) serves as the "weapons master" of this deck, and thus Equipment should be available for at least two of the three arenas. Stolen Lightsaber was the best choice. The Equipment from Clone Wars: Republic at War can be used for either the Character arena or the Ground arena and provides a +1 health bonus to the card it is attached to. This assists Asajj Ventress or Sith Master and Apprentice shore up defensives to resist Light Side attack. Asajj Ventress's Lightsabers (A) benefits the Rattataki acolyte and also provides an opportunity to exploit Dark Rage by allowing Asajj Ventress to untap and use the benefits of the Battle card twice.

Conclusion:

A successful Dark Jedi has been presented in this article to help you combat the force of the Light Side because, as Dark Helmet wisely surmises, "...now you see that evil will always triumph because good is dumb."
