Gungans Bombad
By Brian Weeks

With the release of the Invasion of Naboo expansion, many of the "old" subtypes were brought back into the limelight, ready to fight another day. One of these subtypes, Gungans, was one that really didn't get the attention it deserved the first time around. The IDC hopes to reconcile this oversight. While this deck is by no means "the deal-breaker" in Gungan decks, it has some potential and may give you some ideas for constructing your own Gungan deck.

Character: (18)
3x Boss Nass (A)
3x C-3PO (C)
2x Captain Tarpels (A)
2x Captain Tarpels (B)
4x Gungan General
2x Tobler Ceel (A)
2x Yoda (J)

Most Gungan decks focus on a Swarm deck technique and this one is no different. My personal Swarm deck designs try gain Build points or reduce Build cost at a typical three per build roll. Thus, Boss Nass (A), C-3PO (C) and Lars Homestead are featured highly in this deck and at least two of them should be depolyed in a first turn Build step. Once your build engine in place, you can start depoying at will. Use a Jawa Sandcrawler to cycle your cards. Captain Tarpels is doing double duty in this deck by either giving your Gungans Accuracy 1 or an Untap. Gungan General gives your Gungan Characters power and since it's not unique, you can be granting up to +4 power per unit. And Tobler Ceel (A) is almost guaranteed to give all of your Gungans Fury 3 with this deck. Call me old school, but I still like to keep Yoda (J) around, not only for drawing, but some Jedi backup.

Ground: (16)
4x Fambaa Shield Beast
2x Jawa Sandcrawler
2x Kaadu Cavalry
4x Kaadu Scout
4x Militiagung Squad

A Gungan deck would not be complete without Fambaa Shield Beast. Getting out multiples of these can protect your Gungan Ground units for many turns. Kaadu Cavalry, as discussed in this weeks COTW, has the potential to do additional damage to another unit in the Ground or Character arena. Kaadu Cavalry could also be swapped out with the popular Gungan Kaadu Squad. Either way, with Captain Tarpels (A) giving Accuracy 1, Tobler Ceel (A) giving Fury 3 or Captain Tarpels (B) granting an untap ability, you have plenty of options to deal some damage. Kaadu Scout grants your units Accuracy 1 and Militiagung Squad granting an additional Fury 3. These cards have the potential to make Kaadu Cavalry a lean, mean fighting machine with the possibility of +1 power (from Boss Nass (A)), Shields 1 to 4 (from Fambaa Shield Beast), Accuracy 1-4 and Fury 6 (with Tobler Ceel (A) and Militiagung Squad). Wow! Then throw in the ever faithful Jawa Sandcrawler for drawing (it would also cost 2 less build because of C-3PO (C) and Lars Homestead).

Space: (12)
1x Bravo Five (A)
1x Bravo One (A)
2x Bravo Squadron (A)
4x Naboo Resistance Fighter
4x Naboo Defense Fighter

Space is always hard to design for a Gungan deck, but I stuck with my Swarm theme because these Starfighters can take advantage of Lars Homestead to cost 1 less Build. Space is pretty straightfoward in its use. Bravo Five (A) can reduce the power of an attacking Space unit while Bravo One (A) can add power to your attacking Space unit. Bravo Squadron (A) is a sweet unit which can grant your Space units attack strength through power and Accuracy 1 or defensive strength through Shields 1 and Evade 1. Very useful. Naboo Resistance Fighter is there to primarily protect Bravo Squadron (A) with it's free Intercept. And the Naboo Defense Fighter is a great, cheap unit to pound your opponent into submission with Accuracy 1, Critical Hit 1 and Stun

Battle: (6)
3x Thwart
3x Trap Door!

Battle cards are pretty interchangable with this deck, but I included Thwart to Disrupt your opponent's abilities and Trap Door! to tap and deal damage to any pesky Character units.

Mission: (4)
2x Call to Arms
2x Shield the Army

The Mission cards are also pretty interchangable. Call to Arms allows you to draw more Gungans and Shield the Army allows you to give your Character units Shields 2 (since the Ground arena is pretty well covered by the Fambaa Shield Beast). I was trying to stick to the theme with these Mission cards, but Homing Missile would be a good substitution for Call to Arms since the Jawa Sandcrawler is helping you draw cards. It's your choice on what to substitute.

Location: (5)
3x Lars Homestead
2x Swamps of Naboo

Lars Homestead helps lower your cost on most of your units and the Swamps of Naboo give all of your Gungan units an additional Evade 1.

Equipment: (2)
2x Gungan Shield

Gungan Shield is another card that can be left out if you so choose. If you want to stick with a theme, leave it in. Otherwise, dedicate your card slots to the Swarm.

Conclusion:
While my deck has some extra "theme" cards included that could probably be left out, the potential for a great Gungan deck is there. Low Build cost, a multitude of granted abilities and the chance to overwhelm your opponent, are all possibilities with this deck. If you have your own thoughts or preferences for a Gungan deck, feel free to discuss them on the message board thread. Until next time!
