The Diplomats are in Control.
By Garritt Pruim aka "The Great One"

There have been a few moments in the course of the history of the Diplomat deck that have been important. When A New Hope came out, the card Support in the Senate gave you extra build to help out the Diplomats, either in the Character arena or in other arenas. Then, Jedi Guardians added a new twist to the Diplomat deck in Rapid Recovery and the Padme Amidala and Anakin Skywalker combo. With the release of The Empire Strikes Back, the Han Solo and Princess Leia deck was born. The Empire Strikes Back also was the set that introduced Lando Calrissian, who was the first really combat capable Diplomat character. It wasn’t until the release of Revenge of the Sith that the Diplomat deck got Padme Amidala (H), the center piece of the Diplomat deck. Fall of the Republic gave us the first Diplomat Ground unit, Bail’s Speeder (A), and although it was a Diplomat, it was unique and geared towards helping Jedi. Scum and Villany gave the Diplomats their first Space unit in Consular Ship and it was beneficial to the Diplomats because it allowed the unit to prevent damage to your Characters while in the build zone. While the Diplomat decks of the past had some nice tricks at their disposal, they deck never really had strong presence in the Ground or Character arena. With the release of Invasion of Naboo you can now play a pure Diplomat deck and use the pencil pushers to fight on all three fronts.

Now that our little history lesson is out of the way lets discuss the deck itself.

Character: (12)
x4 Chancellor Finis Valorum (A)
x4 Mas Ameda (B)
x4 Padme Amidala (H)

The Character arena is the main focus of the deck. First, you have Padme Amidala (H), she is really the unit that makes the deck. Since the Dark side typically only gains 4 Force per turn, Padme Amidala (H) limits the amount of attacks the Dark side can make in a given turn by making them pay 2 Force before they can even consider attacking a Diplomat unit. Chancellor Finis Valorum (A) has been a hot topic of late. As we all know he gives you control of the Character arena if you have another Character in the arena. This allows you to fight a two front war instead of a three front war like the Dark side player will be fighting. Mas Ameda (B) is another Character that is causing problems for the Dark side player. As long as you have Chancellor Finis Valorum (A) in the Character arena Mas Ameda (B) will be a serious thorn, the Dark side player either chooses to attack and pay 2 Force to Padme Amidala (H) or they don’t attack and play a Battle card at a +2 Force premium or an activated ability and a +2 Force premium. The Character arena presents a serious problem for the Dark side, not with powerful units but by powerful abilities that combo together.

Ground: (14)
x4 Coruscant Guard Squad
x4 Eddicus-Class Planetary Shuttle
x1 Han’s Strike Team (A)
x1 Senate Bureau of Intelligence (A)
x4 Sympathetic Delegation

The Diplomat Ground arena is not going to win through power alone, but what it will do is eventually wear you down. The Eddicus-Class Planetary Shuttle is helpful in tutoring for any Diplomat card in your deck. If you need a Space unit you can get it. If one of your Characters died you can go get another one. If you need another Ground unit you can get it. The Coruscant Guard Squad is not a Diplomat unit, but they can help you in any arena. I generally use them sparingly, usually when they don’t have a lot of Ground units. The main Ground unit is the Sympathetic Delegation. This is the engine of the Diplomat card drawing engine. Don’t misunderstand me. The Diplomats do not have an uber-infinite card engine but they do have some serious potential to draw a lot of cards. In set up, I will deploy as many of these as possible and will search them out with the Eddicus-Class Planetary Shuttle, especially if I have a lot of Battle cards in my hand.

Space: (14)
x4 Bureaucratic Vessel
x2 Consular Class Space Cruiser
x2 Padme’s Yacht (C)
x2 Queens Royal Starship (A)
x4 Senatorial Shuttle

The Space arena is not really a main focus of the deck. However, the Space arena can play a pivotal roll in the deck. Multiple copies of the Senatorial Shuttle can be very difficult for your opponent.

Battle: (18)
x3 Discuss It In Committee
x4 Dismiss
x3 Foil
x4 Stall
x4 Vote of No Confidence

As you can see, a majority of the Battle cards are a Disrupt of some kind. The point of the Battle cards are to control what my opponent can do. Foil is protection against Dissolve the Senate and Homing Missile. Stall and Discuss It In Committee are going to keep your opponent from destroying too many of your units. Dismiss has been useful against Kouhuns. Vote of No Confidence can be a game changer if you use it wisely. I will try to play as many Battle cards that I can, provided I have a couple of Sympathetic Delegation deployed.

Location: (4)
x4 Cloud City Battleground

The Location is very important. It reduces the cost of the Battle cards so that you can play multiple battle cards per turn, which should allow you to draw some cards.

Cards that almost made it:
Aks Moe (A)
Senate Repulsorpod
Diplomat’s Blaster

The Equipment cards add more control to the deck but finding spots for them is very difficult. The Senate Repulsorpod adds another way to control activated abilities, mainly Kouhuns. The Diplomat’s Blaster is a nice card to disrupt attacks but in the end, the unpredictable nature of the card is what keeps it out. Aks Moe (A) adds more card drawing to the deck but dilutes the Character arena. In order to fit him in I would need to decrease the amount of other Characters in the deck, something I don’t really want to do at the moment.

Conclusion:
I have played a few games with the deck and have had good success. The key to the deck is getting Padme Amidala (H) into the Character arena. Without her it will be difficult to win. If she is killed it should be your top priority to replace her. Your second priority should be getting Sympathetic Delegation' s into the Ground arena as soon as possible. Once you get the Delegations into play try to play as many Battle cards as possible. The deck is fun to play, so enjoy.
