Jonathan's Card Ratings #0 - Obi-Wan Kenobi - Part 1
By Jonathan Clement

Welcome to Jonathan's Card Ratings! This was my first offering in this series (originally posted on Rebelbasers and is now be re-featured on the IDC website.

So, first in the series-->Obi-Wan Kenobi, part 1 (A-I)

About the rating system, a rating of:
1= A terrible card with no reason to play. (Example: IBC Hailfire Droid)
2= A card that with some uses in certain deck's, but other choices are usually better. (Example: Bravo Starfighter)
3= An average card. (Example: X-Wing Rogue Seven)
4= Excellent. A rating of 4 signifies a card that stands above the majority of cards of its type and a solid choice for many decks. (Example: Splinter the Republic)
5= Outstanding. Reserved for a select few cards. This marks an extremely powerful card or one that is great in virtually any deck. (Example: Dismiss)

Obi-Wan Kenobi (A)

A pretty well overlooked card, probably due to it's 40 Speed, that actually is not a bad unit for 7 Build. He is a great counter to Stealth, which can really ruin your day. The fact that he can use his ability on himself when he takes lethal damage is a nifty bonus. He has a place in decks that require injections of Force and want a default-way to deal with Stealth (I put him in my "Jedi-Only" deck).

Rating: 3

Obi-Wan Kenobi (B)

A multi-purpose unit and one of the best characters from the Attack of the Clones expansion. Gives a player lots to work with for just 5 Build, and the Critical Hit with 5 Power makes him pack a punch. The downside is that he requires extra Force to utilize and is pretty slow at 40 Speed. One thing about Obi-Wan Kenobi (B) that a skilled player can use to his/her benefit is that his Critical Hit makes him a priority target for enemy characters.

Rating: 3.75

Obi-Wan Kenobi (C)

Basic stuff here. It's amazing how long a 2 for 2 Evade Character can last, but there really are much better choices out there for 4 Build and even better Obi-Wan's (for instance Obi-Wan Kenobi (G)). There really isn't much reason to play him in a constructed format, although he would be good in a booster-draft or other limited format.

Rating: 1.5

Obi-Wan Kenobi (D)

A different approach to the Character than what's found in AotC. An adequate deal at 6 Build for 60/4/6 with the Evade and Stun. Unfortunately, the Stun can be difficult to trigger with all the prevention and at only 4 Power. This is a handy unit to have at the top of a stack with the extra speed and power to fuel the Stun.

Rating: 3

Obi-Wan Kenobi (E)

I always wanted to like this Obi-Wan, but it really depends on the deck your opponent uses as to whether or not he is very good. Against non-Jedi he is a terrific defensive unit with Shields 2 and a 2 for 2 Evade, but when thrown against Jedi or Sith (which is often) he is merely average at best. Unless you know your opponent has no Jedi characters, there are better choices.

Rating: 2.25

Obi-Wan Kenobi (F)

One of my favorite and most-played Obi-Wan's. An awesome defender with his Intercept and Evade, with the icing on the cake being the Force gain when he is discarded. These abilities make him, for me, a default defender in many decks that need to protect valuable fragile units. His extra health over Obi-Wan (G) really helps, which gives him a lot of staying power especially when paired with an in-reserves Yoda (E) and/or GH-7 Medical Droids. With such a set up, you can really fortify your Character arena without having to resort to the Spirits/Jabba combo. As dedicated interceptors go, his Evade puts him above Chewie (although with much less offensive power) and others. His 40 Speed counters Stealth and his 5 Power is handy, but he's really there for the defense. Benefits greatly from extra Force and healing, but without them he is still a solid unit.

Rating: 4

Obi-Wan Kenobi (G)

Many prefer this cheaper version to Obi-Wan Kenobi (F). For 2 less Build, you get -10 Speed (not a big deal when you're talking 30 and 40), -1 Power, -1 Health (quite a hit to a defensive unit), and no Force gain ability. In a deck that doesn't have additional ways to prevent or remove damage he may in fact be the better unit at his dirt-cheap 4 build. Still, he doesn't have the impact of Obi-Wan Kenobi (F) and doesn't provide as significant a defense.

Rating: 3.75

Obi-Wan Kenobi (H)

A nice idea, but there are many easier/cheaper ways to get copies of Luke. If he's deployed he'll probably be around for awhile with his 7 Health and 2 for 2 Evade, but for the same cost you can get the more powerful and useful Obi-Wan Kenobi (A) version or one of a number of much better units. It dosen't really even have a place in a deck dedicated to making Luke a monster with Jedi Temple.

Rating: 1.75

Obi-Wan Kenobi (I)

With the force as his ally, this Obi-Wan is a Character to be reckoned with. His 3 for 4 Evade is either a blessing (when he takes 3 or 4 damage) or a curse (when he takes 1 damage) and a Deflect is always a very good thing, even at 3 Force. His 9 Power against damaged units is nice, but I wish he had a Critical Hit or an Accuracy against them instead, as far too often I've rolled 9 dice turn after turn only to end up with 2 or 3 hits. This Obi-Wan is great against other big brusiers because he can prevent so much damage and will probably hit them harder, but against swarms he's doomed.

Rating: 3.25
