Skywlkr's Deck Vault #5
by Brian Weeks

Greetings! After a few weeks of "away" time, I finally have the time to write another Deck Vault Article. It's been a while since I wrote my last one (Skywlkr's Deck Vault #4), so I may be a bit rusty. Here's another deck of mine that was a favorite, the Light Side Speeder deck. And with the release of Battle of Hoth, there's some new speeders to play with. So, on to the deck.

Wedge Stole Luke's Speeder!

2x Tow Cable

3x Echo Base Trooper
3x Rebel X-wing

Totals:
13 Character
12 Ground
12 Space
9 Battle
6 Mission
6 Location
2 Equipment
6 Multi-Arena

66 Total Cards

The basic premise of the deck is to:

  1. Have Wedge Antilles (B) on Luke's Snowspeeder (A),
  2. Have R2-D2 (J) on Luke's X-wing (B) stack,
  3. Have Yoda (E) in your Reserves, and
  4. Have Lars Homestead in your Character zone.

Then the strategy was to:

  1. Deploy your units for less build (Rebel Escape Squad and Lars Homestead help do this), and
  2. Prevent nearly all damage done to any of your units with the Battle cards, Yoda (E) and Wedge Antilles (B)'s prevent ability.

Character: (13)
3x Dark Woman (A)
3x R2-D2 (J)
3x Wedge Antilles (B)
3x Yoda (E)
1x Yoda (J)

As discussed above, this deck is primarily designed to have two very powerful pilots in the Space and Ground arenas: Wedge Antilles (B) and R2-D2 (J). Both have great damage prevention abilities and when coupled with the abilities of their respective units (Luke's X-wing (B) and Luke's Snowspeeder (A)), are almost unstoppable.

Couple this damage prevention with Yoda (E)'s Reserve ability and your Battle cards and there are only one or two deck types that can give you problems.

Dark Woman (A) is there to really just hold the arena (if Yoda (E) is in Reserves). I like her multiple abilities (and the fact that she deploys for one less build with Lars Homestead), but you can replace her with another unit if you wish.

Yoda (J) is also there for support. He's an excellent drawing card and has good damage prevention abilities.

Ground: (12)
3x Alliance Assault Craft
3x Luke's Snowspeeder (A)
3x Rebel Camp
3x Unmodified Speeder

Luke's Snowspeeder (A), as mentioned previously is there for Wedge Antilles (B) to pilot. Unmodified Speeder is there for some additional attack units. Alliance Assault Craft is a new unit from the Battle of Hoth expansion and gives you the chance to deal some unpreventable damage.

The new unit to this deck is Rebel Camp. Typically, I would have Jawa Sandcrawler for drawing power, but thought I might try out this new unit instead. The chance to prevent even more damage to my power units is too hard to pass up. Future play testing will show if it's overkill or not.

Space: (12)
3x Luke's X-wing (B)
1x Luke's X-wing (C)
1x Luke's X-wing (D)
1x Millennium Falcon (B)
2x Rebel Escape Squad
4x X-wing Escort

Luke's X-wing (B) and the subsequent stack, coupled with R2-D2 (J), provide a very strong Space unit with some strong Evade and damage prevention.

The Millennium Falcon (B) and X-wing Escort provides some additional units to attack with.

The Rebel Escape Squad is there for Build gain as well as attacking.

Multi-Arena: (6)
3x Echo Base Trooper
3x Rebel X-wing

These are both new units to this deck. Their flexibility in being multi-arena units allow me to deploy and move them to whichever arena I need help in. Since this is a new unit type, it's still pretty untested by me. But, there appears to be some great potential there. Time will tell.

Battle: (9)
3x High-Speed Dodge
3x Jedi Piloting
3x Power Dive

High-Speed Dodge and Jedi Piloting are for damage prevention.

Power Dive lets you untap a starfighter (Luke's X-wing (B)) or untap a speeder (Luke's Snowspeeder (A)).

Mission: (6)
3x Seek the Council's Wisdom
3x Wedding of Destiny

Both of these cards are straightforward and "old-school". Use to gain Force and draw cards.

Location: (6)
3x Lars Homestead
3x Rebel Trenches

Lars Homestead is there to reduce the Build cost of just about every unit in this deck.

Rebel Trenches protects your Ground units even more by granting the Armor.

Equipment: (2)
2x Tow Cable

Tow Cable is a new Equipment added to this deck, so I'm not sure yet how it's going to work out. But it sounds promising. Give an opponents unit Upkeep: 1 damage counter and -10 speed. And, as an added bonus, when that unit is discarded, you get your Tow Cable back.

So let's take a look at how it all sets up.

IDEAL SETUP
(Assuming a 30 build setup)

8 build

7 build

12 build

BUILD ZONE AFTER SETUP

3 build

HAND AFTER SETUP (And Drawing 1 Card)

FIRST BUILD STEP

(Assume a Build roll of 4+1 for all three arena bonus = 5 Build)

+1 Build for Rebel Escape Squad

Total Build = 6 Build

- Play Lars Homestead (4 Build Left)

- Deploy Yoda (J) to Reserves for 1 Build (3 Build Left)

- Play Rebel Trenches (1 Build Left)

- Put Rebel X-wing in Build zone with 1 Build on it. (0 Build Left)

- Move Wedge Antilles (B) to Luke's Snowspeeder (A)

- Move R2-D2 (J) to Luke's X-wing (B)

AFTER FIRST BUILD STEP

Reserves

Yoda (J) stays in your Reserves to prevent damage to your other units.

Luke's Snowspeeder (A) now has Armor, Evade 2, +20 speed, +2 power, Accuracy 1 and Prevent 2 damage.

Luke's X-wing (B) now has Critical Hit 4, Evade 2, Lucky 3 and damage counter removal

This deck is great fun to play with once the key units are in place. Feel free to swap out some units and let me know your thoughts on the forums.
